NEW YORK ? The dollar rose against other major currencies after the U.S. government released a pair of mixed economic reports.
Currency trading is thin Friday ahead of Christmas. U.S. financial markets will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday, which falls on Sunday.
The euro fell to $1.3040 in late trading Friday from $1.3043 late Thursday. The British pound fell to $1.5605 from $1.5678. The dollar rose to 0.9371 Swiss franc from 0.9364.
The Commerce Department said Friday that orders to U.S. factories for durable goods rose 3.8 percent in November, the biggest gain since July.
In a separate report, the Commerce Department said that consumer spending rose 0.1 percent and incomes also rose 0.1 percent. Both gains were below what economists were expecting.
In other trading Friday, the dollar fell to 78.02 Japanese yen from 78.17 Japanese yen and to 1.0206 Canadian dollar from 1.0212 Canadian dollar.

Intended for disc jockeys and home studio engineers, Shure's SRH550DJ is an affordable entry-level headphone pair. At $125 (list), the SRH550DJ is less expensive than some more-hyped DJ-oriented models, like the Beats Pro by Dr. Dre From Monster ($449.95, 4 stars). The SRH550DJ is quite similar to Shure's less expensive headphone pair, the SRH440 ($99.99, 4 stars)?the primary difference being earcups that easily twist away from the ear, and a slightly deeper bass response. If you're in search of deep bass, however, you're looking in the wrong place?the SRH550DJ manages to represent seriously low frequencies without ever boosting them dramatically. Unfortunately, the headphones can be a little uncomfortable on long listening sessions and they will distort slightly in high volume studio/live gig scenarios. For the price, however, they are a great deal.
Design
The black and gray design of the Shure SRH550DJ is all chunky plastic with little flare?the Shure logo graces the top of the headband and the circumarual (around-the-ear) earcups, along with the model name. The ear cushions are black and nicely padded, but most usefully, they are removable and replaceable?without coming off easily during standard use. The ear cushions protect a 50mm dynamic neodymium magnet driver in each ear. It would have been nice to see Shure incorporate a detachable cable into the SRH550DJ's design, like Monster did with the Beats Pro by Dr. Dre and Shure itself did with its in-ear SE215 ($119, 4 stars), but since that's not really a standard feature with most studio headphones, we'll let it slide. As the name implies, however, the SRH550DJ is not just meant for the studio, it's aimed at DJs. Part of the DJ-friendly design is flip-out earcups that make it easy to monitor the room with one ear and what's in your console mix in the other?another feature the Beats Pro also has. Aside from that, however, the design is fairly barebones. A drawstring protective carrying pouch comes with the headphones, as well as ?-inch gold threaded adapter for larger headphone jacks.
Performance
If you're using the SRH550DJ with a mobile device like the iPhone, it won't get super-loud at maximum volume?which is a good thing. It still gets as loud as any reasonable listener would need, but its higher-than-standard-earphone impedance (32 Ohms) keeps it from drilling your eardrums. This also keeps it from distorting, even at maximum volume on deep bass tracks like The Knife's "Silent Shout" or Thom Yorke's "Cymbal Rush." For use as studio monitors at home, I experienced some distortion at maximum volume using the Digi003's more powerful headphone output to monitor a Moog Taurus III (a synth capable of insanely deep bass tones) at very high volumes. It should be noted that at comfortable listening levels or even louder-than-comfortable levels, I experienced? almost no distortion. However, compared with my standby studio pair, the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro ($149.95 4.5 stars), they offer less clarity in the low frequencies and distort more easily at high volumes.
On modern classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the SRH550DJ sounds a tad bright, with the higher register instruments in the orchestra occasionally sounding a bit harsh when monitoring at higher volumes. Since the bass response is more restrained, the lower register instruments are not exaggerated like they are on a lot of modern headphones pairs, like the aforementioned Beats pair. Don't be mistaken?the bass response sounds fantastic, and for studio and DJ applications, a flatter response is ideal.
It's important to remember that, despite the lower price, these headphones are intended for pro (or amateur) uses first, leisurely listening on an iPhone second. The distinction is important, as those seeking thunderous low-end to listen to modern deep bass mixes will definitely be disappointed. The headphones are for evaluating a mix, both in live scenarios at a studio and for DJ gigs. The need for a clear, bright response that can cut through, say, crowd noise, is significant at a DJ gig. The need for unexaggerated bass in a recording studio application is necessary so musicians and engineers can have an accurate sense of what they're recording. Thus, the sound is more clinical than musical or mind-blowing. If you can afford to spend a tad more on studio monitors (and won't be using them for DJ gigs), check out the tried-and-true Sennheiser HD 280 Pro ($149.95, 4.5 stars). The aforementioned Monster Beats DJ headphones are a steep step up in price, but if you want to hear that subwoofer sound in your headphone mix, the Beats surely provide it. For DJs and home studio engineers on a budget, the SRH550DJ is well worth the reasonable price.

The teams above figure to be the top three seeds in the NFC. After that, we essentially have five teams fighting for three spots, which includes the NFC East division title.
10 wins should get you in to the NFC playoffs this year. At this point, it?s quite possible that a 9-7 team gets into the playoffs. That means the Cardinals or Seahawks, both 5-7, could still hang around in the unlikely event that they won out. ?(The two teams face off in Week 17, so they can?t both win out.)
Three NFC hopefuls have come back to the pack dramatically:
Chicago: The Bears looked like one of the best teams in football with Jay Cutler. ?With Caleb Hanie, they are 0-2 coming off a home loss to Kansas City. They have two tough road games left. They might not get to nine wins, much less ten. Their collapse opens up the door for others.
Detroit: The Lions have lost five of seven games, but the Bears? collapse could save them. ?Home games against the Vikings and Chargers are manageable. Unless the Lions can pull off an upset in Green Bay, getting to a 10th win could depend on a trip to Oakland.
New York Giants: Big Blue has lost four in a row, but they have two games left against division leading Dallas. They remain very much in the wild card mix considering a 9-7 team might make it.
Atlanta and Dallas have been playing better of late, but they both lost on Sunday as road favorites. ?Based on the schedules remaining, the Falcons and Cowboys have the easiest paths to the playoffs. Atlanta faces three teams well under .500 (Carolina, Jacksonville, and Tampa Bay), in addition to a road game in New Orleans.
My hunch is that Dallas and Atlanta find a way in. That would mean that one of the three teams in freefall listed in bold above should still make it.
We have a month left to find out which team will collapse the least.

MONDAY, Dec. 5 (HealthDay News) -- When people with type 2 diabetes also struggle with depression, their odds for a third worrisome condition -- dementia -- goes up markedly, a new study suggests.
Specifically, patients with type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to develop dementia three to five years after being diagnosed with depression compared to nondepressed people with diabetes, researchers found.
"We've known for years that diabetes is a risk factor for dementia," explained study lead author Dr. Wayne Katon, a professor and vice chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington's School of Public Health in Seattle. "In fact, having diabetes itself probably doubles the risk for dementia," Katon added.
"We've also known that a very common accompanying condition with diabetes is depression," Katon said. "Some 20 percent of diabetics have depression. And now our data suggests that if you do have depression in addition to diabetes, it actually doubles again the already increased risk for dementia that diabetic patients face."
However, the study authors noted that the absolute risk of dementia for any one person with depression and diabetes remains relatively small -- about one in 50.
Katon and his colleagues published their research, which was supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health-funded Diabetes & Aging Study and the Diabetes Study of Northern California, in the Dec. 5 online edition of Archives of General Psychiatry.
The authors noted that depression and diabetes are among the most prevalent health issues facing American seniors.
What's more, each of the two conditions seem to independently raise the risk for developing the other: Being diabetic bumps up the likelihood of becoming depressed, while being depressed boosts the risk for developing diabetes.
In the new study, the researchers focused on more than 19,000 California residents with diabetes between the ages of 30 and 75.
Nearly one in five of the patients were also deemed to be experiencing "clinically significant" depression, the authors noted.
After monitoring for the onset of dementia over a three- to five-year period, the research team found that just over 2 percent of those who had both diabetes and depression went on to develop one or more forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease.
By contrast, just 1 percent of patients who had diabetes alone ended up developing dementia during that period.
But the authors also noted that many of the things that can boost the odds for depression among diabetic patients, such as eating a poor diet, maintaining a sedentary lifestyle and/or smoking, are modifiable behaviors. This means that patients and physicians alike have some clear targets for interventions to lower depression risk, and possibly dementia risk as well.
"So the important thing to focus on here is that there are very effective treatments for depression," said Katon. "And so if you're a diabetic who does have depression it's very important to get it attended to. Just as important as getting your diabetes itself treated."
Dr. Robert Friedland, chair of neurology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Ky., agreed.
"It is not surprising that they should find a relationship between depression in diabetics and a higher risk for dementia," he said. "But I would point out that although both diabetes and dementia have genetic influences, there are also clear things people can do to lower their risk for both. For example, avoiding obesity by eating a relatively low-fat diet and engaging in regular physical exercise can help to prevent both diabetes and depression. And, therefore, dementia as well."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? The Green Bay Packers are still perfect and heading to the playoffs.
Aaron Rodgers engineered a last minute drive to set up a 30-yard field goal by Mason Crosby on the final play and the Green Bay Packers remained undefeated and clinched a playoff berth with a 38-35 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday.
Rodgers hit three passes of more than 18 yards on the drive in the final 58 seconds as the Super Bowl champion Packers (12-0) won their 18th straight game and handed the Giants (6-6) their fourth straight loss.
New York, which was blown out by New Orleans Monday night, tied the game on a 2-yard Eli Manning touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion run by D.J. Ware with just under a minute to play.
However, Rodgers, who threw four touchdown passes, wasn't going to settle for overtime after a touchback on the ensuing kickoff.
On first down, he completed a pass to Jermichael Finley just over the outstretched hands of rookie linebacker Jacquian Williams and the tight end rumbled 24 yards up the right sideline to the 44.
A 24-yard pass to Jordy Nelson down the left sideline moved the ball to the New York 29 and an 18-yard pass to Greg Jennings two plays later moved the ball to the 12.
Green Bay called time out with 3 seconds to go, and then Crosby delivered his winning kick.
The Packers would clinch the NFC North if Detroit lost to New Orleans on Sunday night.
For the Giants, everything wasn't terrible. Dallas also lost, leaving New York a game behind the Cowboys with four games to go. The two teams will play twice over that span.
Rodgers, who was harassed by Giants front and sacked three times, finished 28 of 46 for 369 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 7 and 13 yards to Donald Driver, 20 to Jennings and 12 to Finley.
Linebacker Clay Matthews also returned an interception 38 yards for a score in the second quarter.
Manning finished 23 of 40 for 347 yards. He had a 67-yard touchdown pass to Travis Beckum and touchdown tosses of 4 and 2 yards to Nicks. Brandon Jacobs scored on a 1-yard run after a rare interception of Rodgers and Lawrence Tynes kicked two field goals with a 50-yard in the fourth quarter getting New York within 28-27.
Rodgers hooked up with Driver on a 7-yard TD with 3:34 to go to push the lead to 35-27.
However, Manning hit tight end Jake Ballard on two 15 yard passes and connected with Victor Cruz for 22 yards to set up the game-tying score that New York thought would send the game to OT.
Rodgers had other ideas, though, and the Packers continued their run at trying to match Miami's perfect season in 1972.
It's not surprising New York gave them a game. The Giants ended the Denver Broncos perfect season at 11 games in 1998 and they knocked off the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in February 2008 when Tom Brady and company were a game from perfection.
The Giants let the Packers know early they were going to be in a for a battle this week.
Manning and Beckum, who had one catch all season, combined on a 67-yard catch and weaving run for a touchdown on the third play of the game.
Rodgers tied the game with a 12-yard TD pass to Finley on Green Bay's second possession, only to see New York take the lead on a 38-yard field goal by Tynes.
New York seemed to be in control until Manning made a mistake on a play action pass on the first play of the second quarter. With his primary receiver covered, Manning threw a sideline pass to Ahmad Bradshaw in front of the Packers bench and Matthews jumped the route and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown and a 14-10 lead.
Rodgers had only been intercepted four times all season but linebacker Chase Blackburn, who was signed on Wednesday, picked him off at the Green Bay 21 and returned the ball to the 12. Two plays later, Brandon Jacobs plowed in from the 1 to give New York a 17-14 edge.
Rodgers atoned for the error on the next series, driving the Packers 80 yards in 11 plays with the biggest play being an 11-yard scramble on a third-and-10 from New York 43. Rodgers capped the march with a 13-yard, third-down touchdown pass to a wide-open Donald Driver on a play in which the Giants secondary blew the coverage.
Rodgers pushed the lead to 28-17 on the opening series of the second half with his fist TD pass to Driver but Manning got New York back in the game later in the quarter with his first TD to Nicks.

From Arlene to Sean, the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season had 19 major storms.?The season saw advances forecasters have made in providing local emergency managers with timely warnings.
The curtain has fallen on the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season ? one that enters the record books in a four-way tie for the third-largest number of named storms on record.

Tropical Storm Arlene started things off in late June. By the time Nov. 30 arrived, the roster ended with 19 named storms, ending with Tropical Storm Sean in early November.
Indeed, the season might have topped 19 named storms, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami didn't catch a blink-and-you'll-miss-it storm in early September that quickly reached tropical-storm status, only to weaken hours later. It spent its brief life well off the US East Coast.
Forecasters noticed the storm as they performed their usual season's-end review of data on Atlantic-basin activity. The review also led to Tropical Storm Nate's promotion to Hurricane Nate.
Although the number of named storms was well above the long-term average of 11, the number of hurricanes and major hurricanes were only slightly above average, according to the center's post-season analysis.

Still, for much of the US East Coast, it was a season to remember.
In late August, Hurricane Irene moved out of the eastern Caribbean and up along the US East Coast. It made landfall three times as it slid up along the East Coast: at Cape Lookout, N.C., at Little Egg Inlet, N.J., as a hurricane, and finally near Coney Island as a tropical storm.
The storm's winds and heavy rains assaulted a landscape along much of the coast and deep into New England whose trees were laden with leaves and whose roots were clinging to soils already saturated from previous rain storms. Storm-felled trees and limbs left 4 million customers without electricity.
From Maryland and Delaware through Maine, 10 states saw record flooding along rivers and streams from Irene's downpours, according to the US Geological Survey, which monitors stream flows.
"Irene broke the 'hurricane amnesia' that can develop when so much time lapses between land-falling storms," said National Weather Service director Jack Hayes in a statement.
All along its path from the Caribbean northward, Irene inflicted an estimated $10.1 billion in damage; the storm reportedly killed 56 people.
Tropical storm Arlene and tropical storm Lee added a combined 46 fatalities to a season that would reach $11.6 billion in damages throughout the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico, and 120 casualties.
The season also showcased the advances forecasters have made in providing local emergency managers with timely warnings. Still, efforts are underway to extend storm-track forecasts another two days beyond the current 5-day outlook while reducing the uncertainties in the forecast.
In addition, researchers have placed a heavy emphasis on understanding the drivers behind rapid changes in storm intensity. Last-minute shifts in strength, up or down, ahead of landfall can have a profound effect on the extent of coastline that needs evacuation.
The efforts are being driven in no small part by analyses showing that between 1900 and 2005, damage from landfalling tropical cyclones in the US doubles every 10 years. Costs are rising as more people move to vulnerable coastal areas, triggering the construction of homes, factories, office buildings, and other assets needed to sustain them.

SANTA ANA, Calif. ? An angry ex-husband charged in a shooting rampage at a Southern California hair salon pleaded not guilty Tuesday to killing his former wife and seven others.
Dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit, his face partially covered by a thick moustache and beard, Scott Dekraai was arraigned on eight counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. The bloody onslaught at Salon Meritage rattled the seaside town of Seal Beach last month.
Authorities say the 42-year-old donned a bulletproof vest before shooting his ex-wife, Michelle Fournier, her fellow stylists and patrons at the salon, and a man in the parking lot on Oct. 12. Dekraai was arrested nearby with help from witnesses and, according to court documents, told police he committed the shootings.
Prosecutors were seeking the death penalty for Dekraai, who was engaged in a lengthy, acrimonious custody dispute with Fournier over their 8-year-old son.
Prosecutor Scott Simmons said he expects Dekraai will mount an insanity defense ? and has sought to obtain records from his psychiatrist in preparation.
"Our position is he was absolutely not insane at the time he committed the crime," Simmons told reporters after the hearing.
Defense attorney Scott Sanders declined to comment. Dekraai was being held without bail.
Two dozen relatives of victims crowded the Orange County courtroom for his arraignment, wearing T-shirts in support of the tight-knit beach community and buttons with their loved ones' photos.
After the hearing, Paul Wilson told reporters the focus should be on the victims, including his late wife, Christy, who worked at the salon, and not on Dekraai.
"My wife is the one who deserves all my energy ? not this coward who took her from me," he said.
Authorities say that on the day of the murders, Dekraai took three handguns to a nearby beach where he pondered shooting Fournier. He then headed to Seal Beach, bursting into the salon and shooting eight people in the head and chest during a two-minute rampage. Only one of the victims survived.
After leaving the salon, prosecutors say, Dekraai shot to death a man sitting in his car in the parking lot, then drove away.
Authorities say Dekraai told police after his arrest that he shot Fournier, a friend of hers who had testified for her in the custody battle, and the salon's owner. Dekraai added that he saw the latter coming at him with a pair of scissors.
According to court papers, he said the other killings were "collateral damage."
Dekraai had been locked in a lengthy battle with Fournier over their son. A family court-appointed psychologist had recently recommended the divorced couple's shared custody arrangement remain in place even as Dekraai pressed to change the boy's school and spend more time with him at his Huntington Beach home, according to John Cate, Fournier's attorney.
Family court papers show that Dekraai, a former tugboat operator, was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after a 2007 accident left him unable to work. Dekraai also had told the court-appointed psychologist that he had been diagnosed as bipolar, according to Cate.
Dekraai's son is being cared for by the boy's 24-year-old sister, Chelsea Huff. She told reporters she has received an outpouring of support from community members as she works to meld her relationship with her younger brother to more of a parenting role. She said the boy was doing well.
"He's such a good li'l spirit," she said.
